The Tragedy of Macbeth
The play begins with the three witches, they are the first characters you'll meet in the play. Macbeth and Banquo meet
the witches as the cross a moor. The witches tell Macbeth that he would be made the thane of Cawdor (a rank of scottish nobility)
and eventually king of Scotland. The tell Banquo, Macbeth's best friend, that he will never be king but his desendents will.
When the witches disappear, Duncan's (the king of Scotland) men come to thank the two generals for their victories in battle
and to tell Macbeth that he has become thane of Cawdor. Next part of the prophecy ws that Macbeth would be crownd king. Mabeth
plot a plan to get rid of former king Duncan and next-in-line to the throne, Malcolm.
He and his wife, Lady Macbeth plan to kill the king and plant the evidence on the drunken guards, since they would be too
drunk to remember anything. While Duncan is asleep, Macbeth stabs him, despite his hesitation and a number of supernatural
portents, including a vision of a bloody dagger. Duncan's sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, flee
to England and Ireland, fearing that whoever killed their father must be after them as well.
Macbeth goes to visit the witches for a second time, there, they show him a sequence of deamons and spirits who present
him with further prophecies:
- Must be beware of Macduff
- Can't be harmed by no one not born of a woman
- Safe until the Birnam Wood can walk
Macbeth feels relived and confident, since everyone is born of a woman and trees cannot walk. Later, he finds out that
Macduff has fled to England to get Malcolm, so he orders some murderers to seize out Macduff's castle, there, Lady Macduff
and her children are murdered.
When Macduff finds out that his family is dead, he is striken with greed and vengence. Malcolm suceeded in raising an army
in Englnd and joins him to go to Scotland to challenge Macbeth and his army.
Lady Macbeth, has become sick in the head, she becomes plaged with sleepwalking and she bemoans what she thinks to be bloodstains
on her hands. Before the fight, Macbeth finds out that she has killed herself. he waits for the English army and feels very
confident due to the witches prophecies.
Macbeth starts to worry when he sees the army advancing on Dunsiane sheilded with boughs cuts form Birnam Wood (the Birnam
Wood are coming to Dunsinane, like in the witches prophecy)
In the battle, Macbeth hews violently, but the English forces gradually overwhelm his army and castle. On the battlefield,
Macbeth encounters the vengeful Macduff, who declares that he was not “of woman born” but was instead “untimely
ripped” from his mother’s womb (cesarean section). Macduff kills and beheads him. Malcolm, now the king of Scotland,
declares his benevolent intentions for the country and invites all to see him crowned at Scone.
